Double vodka :: Tuesday, July 30 2002

I met Alan at the Red Roaster and we played two player Battleships on my new phone. Sheona arrived a little later and she and I watched Austin Powers 3 at the Odeon. Alan couldn't come with us as he started work before the film would have ended.

In the evening Charlie, Steve and I went to a nice little bar above a pub called "Free Butt". I enjoyed two double vodkas with lemon and lime in the nice surroundings. Charlie was considering having her 23rd birthday there at the end of August.

Rileys Summer Vouchers

A really hot day in Brighton, lots of hazey sunshine. Sheona and I spent most of the day on the beach. It was really nice. I think Sheona was worried about burning, but you could hardly notice a thing against her red skirt. Actually, compared to the majority of the people on the beach, she was absolutely fine.

Later in the evening, Alan and I played some American pool at Riley's in the swealtering poorly airconditioned pool hall. Neither of us could concentrate and the sloping table didn't really make things easier. We before an hour was up and watched the excellent Six Feet Under on Channel 4.

Server neighbours and ill-placed comments :: Sunday, July 28 2002

Another good night's sleep in which I remember trying to memorise what I had dreamed, but as I am writing this down in the afternoon, I cannot remember a thing. I don't understand why dreams are so difficult to remember. However, I do not want this becoming a dream diary, so perhaps its for the best.

I was surprised to find out how easy it is to look at other people's websites and change their content using some SSH commands. You might not think of this as being very significant, but this can be done with no more than a standard account.

I cycled to Sheona's house around midday as I couldn't contact her by phone and her voice mail wasn't active. I guess she was working as noone was in. For most of the afternoon I surfed the net in the Savings 4 U Club and intermittenly went to the Red Roaster and read the Sunday papers.

Alan and Alice met up with me in the Red Roaster shortly before it closed. Alan had his usual double hot chocolate, that is seriously chocolatey; I had a Bonbon, half expresso, half condensed milk. Now I am in danger of become hyper-caffinated making me a little aggitated and more illogical than normal.

Alan offered to take me to the cinema and I invited Sheona along too. As Alice walked out after half an hour's previous screening, due to some scary bits, it was their second turn. The film itself was certainly moe impressive than I had expected, with a decent plot and some pretty cool gory bits... and best of all: zombies - something not seen in cinemas for years and years. Sheona was dead pleased that a female role lead the film and the inclusion of zombies.

After the film, I made sarcastic comment about my phone not being Pay As You Go to Alice. Sheona stared at me and said "Nowaah..." as she does when I say something that puts someone else down. I do this more often on people I don't know well or people that do not answer back. I hate myself for doing this, but its been ingrained in me through years of practice, mainly on my brother. Once or twice, I have truly regretted the effects that some of my sarcastic comments have had on other people. I still remember saying something to David about 4 years a go and remembering how awful it was. I don't actually remember what I said, just that it was bad and there was nothing more that I could say that would make it less bad. David never replied. Elisha has probably become more acustom to this than anyone else, yet my friends in Cornwall know about it, but look at is as being a part of me. Its certainly something that I have been wanting to leave behind for some years now as it doesn't have any positive effect on anyone. Its always important to have a positive effect on anything that you do. No one should be put down without a good reason as it never has a positive outcome on either the perportraitor or the victim.

After leaving Sheona's place I phoned her back to see where I had mislaid a bag that I was carrying. I told her about my ill-advised sarcastic comments and also my frequent in-ability to sense when someone wanted to get rid of me, usually late at night when people wanted to be by themselves. I said that if I ever say something that hurts people's feelings or overstay my wlecome, then she should say - without any quarms of being subtle.

Big Brother final :: Friday, July 26 2002

I was surprised at the order of people leaving the Big Brother house. I would have never have guessed that Jade would have been evicted first. Kate won because she had less obvious annoyances about her and never really stepped on people's toes. Out of the 3 series, I still prefer the first, as the people there were more interesting than in the two sucessive Big Brother's.

Webalizer not revision :: Friday, July 26 2002

For once I had a nice lie-in until 11 o clock when I met with Charlie at the Red Roaster.

After a bit of shopping with Charlie I went back home, sorted out some outstanding hosting payments and then left for University to sort out some past exam papers for revision.

Instead of revising, I spent the afternoon learning how to use and configure Webalizer and added them to several websites, including Nahoo where hits average around 1.2 million.

Watched the Bond film: Live And Let Die, the news and V Graham Norton with Graham Norton interviewing Dennis Hopper, before going to bed.

New colour mobile phone :: Thursday, July 25 2002
Sony Ericsson T68i

I had some pretty strange dreams, one was of this huge greenhouse/animal sanctury housed in a huge glass dome. i can't remember any of the creatures there, but I remember waking, thinking that a pile of boxes on one side of the room was actually a huge mud coloured monster with enormous claws. I cannot remember the second dream, but it seemed pretty good when I woke up. All in all, a good night's dreaming.

My new T68i SonyEricsson mobile phone arrived this morning. Without success, I tried to syncronise my laptop contacts with the empty phone memory. The infrared connection didn't seem to be communicating very well.

Charlie had her sister to stay the night before as it was her graduation day in the Brighton Centre.

Finally, the deposit returns :: Tuesday, July 23 2002

Lots of people wanted to see inside my flat this morning. First it was the plumber at 11.30 then shortly afterwards our estate agent, housing safety officers and the downstairs neighbour. The estate agent pointed out that some damage in the bathroom would be deducted from our current deposit. It looked like Charlie fell over in the bath and knocked a dent in the thin wall and cheap lino tiles. I left to sort out the deposit with Spark and Sons by bike.

The director, Peter Spark, handed me a cheque for the full deposit and I deposited into their bank to retrieve the sum in cash in order to wire it to my previous flat mates. I failed to tell him that I nabbed a domain name with their name on it.

Cycled into Brighton to find out what's happening to fix the leaking bath and broken boiler in our flat. Also, I cycled to see the comletely inept Spark and Sons regarding the deposit on the recent flat. Apparently, their accountant was on holiday and their boss wasn't in, so they couldn't return the money. They are pathetic. I am really glad that I registered their domain name!

Notepad Conception Sketch

Heard about Charlie's night out, the morning after. It basically included lots of free drinks and our neighbour being reported to the police for playing his music too loud ...and I slept through it all.

Charlie and I went to the Red Roaster and read the articles on Harold Shipman in the Guardian and Independent. Charlie brought some records, met up with her friends, we had a vegetarian lunch, I left, then Charlie lost the records.

They cam back later in the afternoon, just as I was finishing clearing up my old paperwork and notes. Anna cooked us pasta, then afterwards, they lit up. A non-smoking flat now stinks of fags. Great.

The film: Bad Company was better than I had expected with several twists in the plot and some good acting from Chris Rock. I met up with Sheona afterwards, she had been working at the Gardner Arts Centre where some drama students were performing their own work. She siad that most of them were either anorexic or fat. It was nice to meet up with her as we haven't seen each other for about a week.

Second year - second chance :: Wednesday, July 17 2002

Today I am feeling really good - a second chance to get a good grade for the second year. Rather than a failure, its much more like an opportunity. I can do much better and also, I'll be able to focus on my work and study with more clarity than this year. Its going to be much better, all round.

I stopped off to Premier Sales to tell them that I paid my rent on time and that they are crap at account, when the woman there said that it had all gone through, without problems this morning. I wish they would stop nagging Charlie, my flatmate, about these problems. She thought that I was trying to evade my rent because I ran out of money or something. There's no need in worrying someone with loads of things on her plate already (or so she makes out all the time).

Alan has been emailing me all afternoon, wanting to change his hosts as I failed to setup his new hosting account on Saturday. Its been quite hard as I haven't my phone with me, otherwise, everything would have been OK.

Second year results :: Tuesday, July 16 2002

Argh! I received a miserable 28.5%, below the required 30% to continue. As I really don't wan't such a poor base for my third year I quickly decided to retake the second year and get 55% or more in order to take the MMath course, rather than a BSc. I'll leave all the paper work until this September.

Charlie is being nice for the first time in ages. She hardly nagged me at all when she got in after another hard day's work. She said that Premier Sales were persistently calling her about my rent payment which they hadn't seen. As my phone has been down since Saturday its quite easy to assume that I have been ignoring the issue. However, I never let financial issues get out of hand as you are always the one to loose out in the end.

We watched several episodes of Futurama on DVD, including some I hadn't seen before and Startrek Voyager on BBC2. We had pizza for supper after doing a little shopping at Sainsburys.

Dead phone :: Sunday, July 14 2002

Its very irritating without a working mobile phone as I cannot talk to anyone anymore without frantically cycling around Brighton in the hope that someone is in. After waking up both Rob and Jess in the messed up flat, I went to the Red Roaster alone, leaving them to start clearing up the mess that they intended to clear over a week ago.

I met up with Sheona after work and we did a spot of shopping so that I had some ingredients for a Chicken Balti curry.

Brighton beach party with Fatboy Slim :: Saturday, July 13 2002

Had a good night's sleep for once as I placed a pillow underneath my back to make it more confortable than the floor alone. I tried to persuade Jess and Rob to come to the Red Roaster with me, but they still hadn't even started clearing up their disgusting flat by 1 o'clock.

After enjoying a great Banoffee Pie and a Café au lait I stopped off at the Internet cafe in St. James Street to sort out my emails.

Sheona, Jess and I took up a good place close to the stage and not far from the shoreline. The others arrived a little later after some frustrating phone calls and texts. The music got better as the evening on and I became more drunk. After getting drenched in the sea, I entrusted my wallet and phone to three girls sitting on the shore. In addition to this I also handed them Jess's and Sheona's tops. Later I frantically went around, searching for our stuff after going in the water. After a second attempt this guy noticed me and took me to where they were, I had just been looking in the wrong place. Sheona and Jess were a bit pissed off with me for doing that, but glad to have something to wear. Later, Sheona, Jess, Ross and I ended up dancing in the sea for about half an hour usually with the company of lots of people pissing into the sea. All in all it was a fantastic evening, and I know that I'll be there next year when the event will be going into its third year.

I took a slow bus home, got changed and met Sheona and Jess at their place, then went off to some kind of house warming/21st birthday party. It was pretty lame and everyone left shortly afterwards.

Sabbs leaving buffet :: Friday, July 12 2002

Today was the last day at work for Jess and the other sabbatical officers for Sussex Students' Union. I brought some chrisps and chocolate to the buffet. Unfortunately I missed another buffet which was across the road and it sounded really good. Anyway, enough of this already.

Jess was presented with a silver goblet for her years work at the USSU and left for East Slope where the cheap alcahol was being sold. Jess, Sheona and I played the Pyramid game and lost all of Jess's change. I played a few games of pool as usual and later in the evening we watched episode after episode of the Simpsons on sky, with some Futurama in between. Cool!

Before going to bed I managed to tune the TV into the aerial with the aid of a needle, connecting the incompatible cable with the TV. I was very surprised to see Channel 5 appear first as its the first time I've seen it on terrestrial in Brighton.

This afternoon I went around small businesses in Penzance asking shop owners if they want to be added to the new directory site, penwith.net for free. The word "free" hit the right key and everyone I spoke to was well up for a free listing. I could have said free-anything and they still would have signed up. In the process I managed to broaden my list of clients for hosting, domains and certainly some future web site design projects.

I met up with Dave Harvey at the Cycle Centre and I discussed his website and the current lack of visitors on the existing site. He was quite impressed with my personal site, Nahoo and the hits it received on a daily basis. So, it looks like I'll be marketing and, on day, designing their website too. Cool.

As the Aga was out we had an Indian takeaway. I was on the internet on the only phone line, until I started wondering why the delivery guy was taking so long... then I realised that he'd left a couple messages on voice mail and I quickly rushed down to catching him asking directions in the village centre. Anyway, the food was hot, but I didn't feel anywhere near as hungry as I had just an half an hour before.

All day I have been feeling a bad as Sheona and Jess have been organising a flat where I could be living for the next year, without me. I know that I can't really do much when I am in Cornwall, but its not nice loosing the choice that I would have go if I were with them.

We went to Godolphin manner and had a large salad at an outside restaurant. The salad was huge and accompanied with smoked trout leaves. Unfortunately the service wasn't good and the menu was really confusing. The waitress had to keep on returning to check that she had the right order.

After lunch we saw granddad at his place in Mylor Bridge. Elisha picked some raspberries from the garden. I informed granddad in writing about my plans for the summer as his hearing aid had run out of batteries. He wondered why I was going to Russia; I thought, why not?

Travelling with a bike :: Tuesday, July 2 2002

Spent most of the day on the train. After the previous late night, Charlie's shouting and an early start, I am pretty exhausted. Seven hours travelling won't help matters. On the train I wrote a 60-point "To Do" list and found out that Summer ain't long enough and there ain't enough money to cover it. The guard on the Paddington to Penzance train gave me hassle about keeping my bike in the luggage compartment, so I had to move it to the front of the carriage to the guard's area. There was already some other bikes there including a similar, "Specialized" racing bike. Luckily the train didn't stop much, so I didn't have to check to often to see whether someone had upgraded their model for a better one.

David looked at me with a smirk when he saw my even-longer goatee and we stopped off at Tesco to fill up the fridge at home.

We watched The Paper in the evening on DVD, one of the fifteen or so that I brought with me from Brighton.
